Bedtime Smoothie For Deep Sleep

Do you have trouble sleeping at night?  The Internet abounds with recipes for warm drinks to help you nod off, but I know that warm drinks aren't everyone's cup of tea.  So, here's a smoothie that'll knock you out, and keep you down until you're well-rested, with no side effects.

For the liquid in the bedtime smoothie, you’ll use tart cherry juice.  Tart cherries are wonderful for sleep, due to their high magnesium count.  You can often find it in the natural foods section of your grocery store, or online

I’ve sweetened it with dates (you can find those here), to up the nutritional value even more.  If you don’t have any dates, or your blender can’t handle them, sub in some raw honey. 

Almonds also contain magnesium, and their protein content works well with the dates or honey to keep your blood sugar even during the night, helping you stay asleep.  Almond butter is an excellent way to work them into a smoothie.  Make sure it doesn’t have any added sugar – this is a good one

I’ve included a small amount of ice, just to chill it slightly, because warm smoothies just aren’t good.  However, there’s enough solid stuff in here that you shouldn’t need more ice to thicken it up.

To make the bedtime smoothie, combine 2/3 c almond butter, 1 1/3 c tart cherry juice, 2 pitted dates (or 1 T honey), and 4 ice cubes in a blender.  Blend until smooth.  Drink, and sleep!
